VIDETEC-2 Winter Measurement Campaign: Advancing Road Safety in Challenging Conditions

The VIDETEC-2 project is proud to announce the successful completion of its Winter Measurement Campaign, conducted on February 25th and 26th, 2025. Building upon the achievements of previous campaigns, this effort reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing the safety of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) such as pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders.

Why Winter Conditions Matter

Winter presents a unique set of challenges for road users, with adverse weather conditions, wet or icy road surfaces, and limited visibility due to darkness. These real-world factors put VRUs at greater risk and test the effectiveness of detection technologies. Through this campaign, VIDETEC-2 has made significant progress in refining radar, cameras, and Joint Communication and Sensing (JCS) technologies to ensure robust performance under these demanding conditions.

Key Focus Areas

The primary objective of this measurement campaign was to advance the common integration of partner technologies at the test intersection in Garching. Key achievements include the permanent installation of five radars on two traffic gantries, the deployment of two Access Points enabling connectivity for Joint Communication and Sensing (JCS) nodes, and the implementation of real-time data processing within edge computing units. Additionally, progress was made in establishing common interfaces between partner technologies, facilitating seamless data exchange for sensor fusion and tracking. The recorded data, combined with ground truth systems, will support further post-mission evaluation and system refinement. The next integration steps are planned for the summer measurement campaign in June 2025.

Collaboration for Safer Roads

This campaign is made possible through the collaboration of industry leaders, research institutions, and technology partners who share a vision for safer urban mobility. By pushing the boundaries of sensing and detection technologies, we strive to create solutions that will protect VRUs in all weather conditions.
